Great location, lounge and pool, but...
PostedJune 16, 2013
The most important thing for me when staying at a hotel is a good night sleep. Several things with our room made that very difficult:
1. Our suite was a connecting room, We could hear EVERYTHING from our neighbours. The doors between the rooms even had a small gap, so that one could have a small peak into their room.
2. Those sliding doors between the bedroom and bathroom had see-through plastic, and as it was impossible to block out sunlight from the bathroom, the bedroom was also lit up early in the morning. What were they thinking? Get rid od those sliding doors OR get decent curtains for the bathroom.
3. The aircon was very noisy.
4. Our corner room had a lot of windows, Great, you think. Well, as the sun hit the windows, it seemed like the material around them (or the windows themselves, hard to say) expanded (or something like that), making clicking / squeaking noises all day. Holy cow, those noises were irritating.
That said, the location, lounge and pool was all excellent. Too bad I was too tired (from not sleeping) to enoy it fully.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Pure pleasure

Stayed here for four nights.
Good Platinum recognition, was upgraded to a Metropolitan suite. Did like l\the location of the hotel.
Breakfast was good, but the breakfast area was at times noisy and crowded. There where few healthy alternatives. No whole grain bread or non-fat yogurt
Nice pool area, small pool, but attentive service.
Attended the complimentary wine and cheese reception for plats one night. Both the wine and service was good.
Room for improvement.:
The curtains in the bedroom did not completely block the light at the top. This was the biggest issue during our stay, and should not happen at a hotel like this.
The prices in the business-center was exorbitant, payed 450 THB to scan three pages.
No sanitizing wipes in the fitness center.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Good Hamburg hotel
PostedJune 9, 2013
Stayed for 3 nights.
Good platinum recognition, upgraded to a junior suite. No Alster view, but I asked for this due to the traffic by the lake
We chose breakfast as plat amenity . This included full buffet in Le Ciel. Great view of lake and food.
Good location
Room for improvement: asked for a quiet room, but was placed under the kitchen. Was awaken at 0630 at morning.
I Was moved to a lower floor the next day.
The furniture in the room may look nice and modern, but it was impossible to be comfortable in.
But I would absolutely stay here again

Wonderful option in the outskirts of Athens
PostedApril 14, 2013
Pros:
- wonderful starwood platinum upgrade policy. Loved the suite AND the fact that the upgrade was given without having to ask at check-in.
- nice and quiet rooms, really liked that the door shut themselves quietly. Hate those slamming doors that wake all guests in nearby rooms.
- what a great idea having a separate elevator on the top floor going directly down to the spa/fitness center on the ground floor.
- free self parking.
- magnificent sea views from almost all of the rooms.
Cons
- selection at breakfast was poor and the same every day (stayed fire nights). The quality was also quite low, e.g. the cofee and juice selection was awful, And why not offer nespresso coffee at breakfast when there is a nespresso machine in the lounge?
- one, horrible CD playing again and again at breakfast. Some soft versions of modern hits. Not very classy.
- club lounge had a nice setting with balconies on both sides, but the food selection was limited and poor. The breakfast in the morning here was a joke, and the evening offerings were gone in 20 minutes, The wine was horrible, a hotel is better off serving no wine instead of some extremly cheap stuff.
- no staff in gym. Sorry parents, but it is not okay sending your children to the gym to play with the equipments. Had a work-out ruined by a family that obviously was bored and decided to use the gym as a fun factory.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Another decent stay
PostedMarch 23, 2013
A solid property in NYC. We always try to get a room at the back, as the ones facing Union Square are quite noisy. Platinum suite upgrades are a hit or miss, I think I have only gotten a standard suite (fantastic suite?) once at this hotel.
Note that if you book through a virtuoso agent, the virtuoso breakfast MUST be had in your room. Very strange, as the spg platinum breakfast can be had in the charming Olives. This should be dealt with.
I always have to correct my bill when checking out here, this time they had wrongfully added a mini bar charge.
The real gem of this hotel is Ms. Baker, the welcome agent/director. Without her I would probably stay elsewhere, as the rates here are always extremely high.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Good choice in Boston - but please fix the gap!
PostedMarch 23, 2013
If this hotel only could do something about the huge gap between the floor and the door, they would get a five star rating from me. But the gap spoiled our stay, as we were awoken in the morning every time there was a noise in the hallway. Door slamming, people talking, kids running etc. etc. And please install soft lock door mechanisms while you are at it. Inconsiderate door slammers are everywhere and not the hotel's fault. ( One should think sleeping would be a priority at hotels?)
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Nice property - but very noisy
PostedMarch 23, 2013
In addition to the very hectic lobby during the weekends (there was a fashion show there the night we stayed...), a lot of the rooms with river/city view have noise coming from the nearby train/subway station. I am a bit surprised that so few people here has mentioned that. We actually switched from a suite to a regular room due to this. (Needed the sleep due to a long trip back to Europe the next day). But while the regular room facing the courtyard was quiet from the outside, a terrible plumming noise from the bathroom above was coming and going - I think it was from the use of the bath tub above.
All in all a very stylish hotel, but we would only stay at the top floor AND facing the back or courtyard if we were to return. Too bad about the noise, as this is one of the hotels that you REALLY want to love.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Good choice in Orlando
PostedJanuary 28, 2013
Nice location - away from the crowds, but still close to the action. All in all a great and quiet stay, with three minuses:
1. Was not given any suite upgrade as per the spg platinum rules. Only after asking, it was offered. Do we really need to point out how frustrating this is? Upgrade should be automatically, not only if you are in the mood of asking (or begging).
2. Breakfast was a disaster, as we waited for ever to get served. They were clearly understaffed the morning we were there. Plus, the platinum continental breakfast was very weak. The general menu looked tempting, but we were not offered to subsitute the platinum breakfast for a specific amount on the menu.
3. Housekeeping was knocking on our door at 2pm, even though we had asked for late check out AND the do not disturb sign was on the door.
Would stay again.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Great hotel!
PostedJanuary 21, 2013
Stayed here on two occasions in December and January 2013. Both times we were upgraded to a nice suite. Loved the room, the location and the common areas.
Some room for improvement:
- Had to wait forever to get the upgraded room. Yes, I know one should be thankful for the upgrade, but other people were also complaining about the slow housekeeping and that rooms never very ready at check in time. Hey, we are paying to get into a room from a certain time at the day!
- Had to ask for the spg platinum upgrade. How hard can it be to do this automatically as per the spg rules?
- it is impossible to block out all the daylight with the current curtains. They may be trendy, but I have never slept in a hotel room with curtains like this.
- platinum breakfast was served at the bar area (by sale) and it was not possible to get all the items one are entitled to per the spg rules using the amount of breakfast credit you get.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

A bit disappointing
PostedJanuary 21, 2013
Managed to snag a platinum suite upgrade during the holidays at this hotel, but that was also one of the few highlights.
Our biggest issue was noise problems. Both staff and other guests were slamming their doors so often and so loudly that I at one point was about to go crazy. The gap between the door and floor did not help, and the construction seemed poor because the walls were shaking when doors were opened and closed. I guess it always depends if the guests next to you are considerate (we had a family with three rooms that treated the hallway as their own), but I would have expected better from housekeeping and other staff members. All in all this hotel is in desperate need of soft close mechanisms at their guest room doors.
You should also consider avoiding anything on a low floor in the south tower, as the very busy street outside are VERY close to the hotel. Yes, you may loose the ocean vierw if staying in a non-ocean room, but without balconies AND the high traffic noise when the french window is open, it is not much to write home about anyway.
The gym was okay, but two of the treadmills were out of order all the five nights we stayed.
Breakfast area was a disaster, and I would have eaten elsewhere if I had not picked the platinum continental breakfast. People were standing in long lines every day, the buffet selection was poor and continental package got boring after a few days. But no substituting items was allowed. (BTW First time ever I have seen a continental breakfast that did not include toast, was charged extra for that) The food quality was also very poor. E.g. the croissant was dry, the yougurt tasted nothing (they did not even have non-fat yougurt) and the grapefruit juice far from freshly squeezed. A lot of poeple were complaning about the lines and the food, the waitors were rather stressed and all in all it was a bad start of the day for both guests and the hotel.
Would probably not return, even in low-season.

Just average this time
By jechho from Norway
Stayed here over New Years. This was our forth visit to the hotel. All in all an average experience.
Usually the rooms here are quiet, but this time the family above us was so noisy I almost had to ask for a room change (but we had a nice suite + they seemed fully booked). Most of the noise comes from chairs and other furniture being moved around on the tiled floor in the rooms and/or on the balcony. They should really consider carpets here. After listening to chair scratching for a while, it just gets maddening.
We had the spg platinum breakfast, and like on our last visit, the waiter decided to automatically add a 20% service charge on the bill + plus leave a tip space open. It made us really uncomfortable. Please let your guests decide what amount they want to tip. This policy will not work in your favor in the long run, it will only create irritation. (Besides, this hotel already has enough of those annoying add-ons. You want pancakes for breakfast? Great. You want blueberries in your pancakes? That’s an extra dollar. And don’t get me started on the resort fee.)
The hotel is pet-friendly, and there are a lot of dogs there. I like dogs, but not on holiday. I have learned my lesson, and asked for a room that did not have dogs as neighbors (barking) or had recently been in it (smell). However, if you want to have your breakfast outside in the restaurant, you just have to tolerate the dogs. In my opinion, they should have one of the sides out sides dog-free.
The hotel is still a fine one, with mostly greatly service (love Anna Marie at front desk) and a reasonably good hard product. But the location is isolated, and without a beach nearby, I need it to be perfect to make it worth a visit. This time it was not, and we will probably not be back for a while.

Regarding the GMs reply
Posted January 31, 2015
Dear Mr. Ashton,
Thank you for taking the time to comment upon my review. It would however be nice if you would comment on the issues raised in the review (noise from furniture above due to no carpet, and the auto-tipping in restaurant) and not on something that I did not bring up at all (the resort fee).
Best regards, jechho
