decent enough
PostedAugust 17, 2015
Perfectly fine hotel for a quick stop over. Very platinum friendly and proactive manager, Jeff. He had secured us a quiet suite on the top floor. Found two beer cans in the room from the last guests, shower pressure was weak and we missed an outdoor pool. Club lounge was ok, but it was freezing cold both morning and evening. Easy on the portable AC, folks. Obviously this is an older hotel, but nevertheless a decent choice in the area.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Good stay
PostedAugust 17, 2015
we were only here for one night in the summer, I imagine it is a really busy resort in the winter. Platinum upgrade was great due to a fantastic and proactive Jennifer. I would recommend to consider floor plan carefully as the whole hotel was a little loud. Also check for a renovated room. Breakfast was a little weak. Resort fee not waived for platinums.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Decent enough - but beware of noise!
PostedAugust 8, 2015
Great spg platinum upgrade to a suite, lovely and modern room, and decent breakfast spread in the morning (made to order waffles!). Lounge looked ok, but was closed for the weekend.
Not so good: Interior view had a terrible humming noise from the main AC, we had to switch to an exterior facing jr suite in the middle of the night. The traffic from North Gulph Road was audible, but not in the same league as the main AC. Beware!
And what did the hotel think when they installed those ultra-slamming doors? It was just not possible to close them without waking the whole hallway. Please, please, change those. You could really be a stand out Sheraton if you did – and I have been to many!
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Please fix those curtains!
PostedMay 24, 2015
My partner and I stayed here three nights in May.
While we did get a nice platinum upgrade to a large executive suite, we were very surprised to see that they did not have any blackout curtains in the room. The curtains they had were in fact so thin that it was impossible to keep the room dark after sunrise (5am-ish - our room faced the sun directly at this time, and it was like sleeping in front of a giant lamp). We asked about this, but neither front desk or housekeeping was able (or willing) to help us. We took care of it ourselves by covering up the windows with duck tape and garbage bags which we bought ourselves. Light (-sensitive) sleepers should probably avoid this hotel until this is fixed.
Furthermore, the breakfast quality was pretty weak, and the ambience there not very good. (Daddy Cool with Boney M in the breakfast area at 8am Sunday morning was kind of tacky.)
Other things:
- Still no club lounge, but they are "planning it".
- We could not find any business center to print our boarding passes.
- Their internet "two device only" policy is rather annoying.
- Pool was quite small.
- Location is surprinsingly attratictive, 10-15 min walk to Kurdam or Schönberg, and away from the hustle and bustle.
- Late check out on a Sunday was granted from Alexander at front desk with a smile.
A decent hotel, but we will not return until they improve their curtain situation.
No, I do not recommend this hotel.

Excellent hotel - but service only so-so
PostedApril 6, 2015
We just checked out of the Arion after a three night stay. This was our second stay at this hotel. While the location is superb and the platinum suite was great (we got a deluxe suite on the top floor), the service was far from five star worthy: Not much greeting from the door men, club lounge service is poor and the waiters at breakfast are ALWAYS busy clearing tables - and not once offered us refill of our coffee etc. Also. if there is a convention going on, other guests are easily overlooked.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Best Westin I have stayed at!
PostedApril 6, 2015
Amazing resort. with tastefully decorated rooms/suites. We visited off-season, and it was very quiet and nice.
Ewout at front desk took good care of us. Had hoped for top floor and/or seafront, but the family suite on 2nd floor was also nice.
Good breakfast. Nice gym. Loved the beach and the surrounding area. Great that they offer the green choice.
Room for improvement:
- The carts can be heard in the room, so it should only be used by the staff at certain hours.
- The breakfast area needs a clear system upon arrival.
- There should be loungers on all balconies.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Better than the laast time
PostedJanuary 18, 2015
Was back at this hotel in January, after a miserable stay here during Christmas. Did not encounter the same amount of trouble, and had a decent stay. Nice platinum upgrade (the hotel was rather empty) and Michelle at check-in was very sweet. My fifth stay here, and probably the best. The spg platinum breakfast get very boring after a few days, and some more variety in the W Café (or even better, give credit to the restaurant) would be nice. Tried to get an extra duvet for the bed, but never received one. Called four or five times, and every time they just brought the thin blanket that covers the duvet. Oh well. As long as you lower your expectations of the soft product/service, this hotel is fine.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Nice hotel, but...
PostedJanuary 13, 2015
This was my fourth stay at this hotel, and yet again I encountered a few issues:
- The heater in the living room did not work (had to be repaired while we were there - this was on a very cold day in Atlanta).
- Extra duvet and two pillows were not in the room upon arrival (even though the butler had promised this twice in the pre-arrival email).
- The room was noisy due to being next to service elevator (I had asked for a quiet room...). Tried to switch, but they were fully booked.
- My own pillow was removed from the room without my consent (easy mistake, but still).
- Dinner menu in the Astor Court was very limited and and quite frankly not of very high quality.
- Turn down service came very late (9.30 pm).
- Butler entered room to clear things even though Do Not Disturb was turned on.
On a positive note, Loandi at front desk was super nice and really tried her best to solve the problems. The spg platinum recognition was good, and the welcome amenity was nice. But at this level, I expect top notch - so no five star rating from me.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Almost excellent
PostedJanuary 9, 2015
There is a lot of good stuff to say about this hotel: Location, staff, spg platinum treatment and good-sized rooms. But I need to deduct one star due to the extremely noisy airconditoner. We were at the hotel during a freezing day in January, and needed the heater to be on. Not a chance. It was so loud we had to turn it off at night, and slept with two duvets instead. The cooling was just as noisy, can not even think about how the summer heat will be here,. Change the jet engine style ACs and we will be back as regulars.
Yes, I recommend this hotel.

Not the Christmas stay I had hoped for
PostedJanuary 9, 2015
Stayed here during Christmas, and ran into too many issues for the high rate I paid. Had a booked a fantastic suite and been guaranteed a high floor – but received an accessible suite on a low floor. The noise from the pool and ventilator made the balconies almost unusable. Asked for a move, but was told that the fantastic suites no longer go higher than 12th floor. Why wasn’t I told about this change? And why did the W Insider promise me a high floor if she knew that would not be possible?
The breakfast at the W Café was served in a meeting room on the second floor, and was probably the worst platinum breakfast treatment I have ever seen.
No cushions for the sunbeds on the balcony. When I called about this, they said they were out of them. What? I vented my frustration with the spg twitter team, and like a Christmas miracle there were cushions out there a few hours later.
Called for an extra duvet for the bed. Never got it. Called again. Still nothing. Gave up when they told me that “we have a back log due to only one elevator working”.
They were fully booked, so that meant an intense battle for sunbeds. We solved this by going to the slightly quieter Wet West at 8am, but if we had wanted to sleep longer, it would have become a problem. Not too happy with Wet West being the announced the “kid pool” over the holiday, though. Isn’t this hotel supposed to be more adult-oriented?
No, I do not recommend this hotel.

Just average this time
By jechho from Norway
Stayed here over New Years. This was our forth visit to the hotel. All in all an average experience.
Usually the rooms here are quiet, but this time the family above us was so noisy I almost had to ask for a room change (but we had a nice suite + they seemed fully booked). Most of the noise comes from chairs and other furniture being moved around on the tiled floor in the rooms and/or on the balcony. They should really consider carpets here. After listening to chair scratching for a while, it just gets maddening.
We had the spg platinum breakfast, and like on our last visit, the waiter decided to automatically add a 20% service charge on the bill + plus leave a tip space open. It made us really uncomfortable. Please let your guests decide what amount they want to tip. This policy will not work in your favor in the long run, it will only create irritation. (Besides, this hotel already has enough of those annoying add-ons. You want pancakes for breakfast? Great. You want blueberries in your pancakes? That’s an extra dollar. And don’t get me started on the resort fee.)
The hotel is pet-friendly, and there are a lot of dogs there. I like dogs, but not on holiday. I have learned my lesson, and asked for a room that did not have dogs as neighbors (barking) or had recently been in it (smell). However, if you want to have your breakfast outside in the restaurant, you just have to tolerate the dogs. In my opinion, they should have one of the sides out sides dog-free.
The hotel is still a fine one, with mostly greatly service (love Anna Marie at front desk) and a reasonably good hard product. But the location is isolated, and without a beach nearby, I need it to be perfect to make it worth a visit. This time it was not, and we will probably not be back for a while.

Regarding the GMs reply
Posted January 31, 2015
Dear Mr. Ashton,
Thank you for taking the time to comment upon my review. It would however be nice if you would comment on the issues raised in the review (noise from furniture above due to no carpet, and the auto-tipping in restaurant) and not on something that I did not bring up at all (the resort fee).
Best regards, jechho
